                     DRUM LESSONS/PERCUSSION LESSONS

                                         (how does it work?)

Taking an interest in drums can mean many things: rock drumming, jazz drumming, school band, marching band or concert percussion. Sometimes a beginning student won't have a clear idea of why he/she wants to play drums. My approach to teaching addresses all interests; however, all students start with a similar methodological approach.

All students start on the snare drum, learning music reading and proper stick control.  Usually by the third lesson, we'll begin drumset, after which about half the lesson is devoted to technique and reading on the snare drum, and the other half deals with drumset beats, fills, and playing with recordings.

Many times the student will take an interest in concert percussion instruments like xylophone, bells, marimba, vibraphone, timpani, and others. A student may want help with a xylophone band part, or be looking for an interesting 4-mallet marimba solo. Some students may be preparing for college auditions or even professional job placement auditions. I am proud to be able so serve a wide variety of needs.

As of this writing, I am seeing from ages 4 to 67. Although the majority of my students are school age, all levels and ages are accepted.

                                                                                                                                                                 (what will I need?)

After the first lesson or two, I will send the students home with a short shopping list which usually includes a couple of books, a folder, and a journal. The journal is a notebook of blank music paper in which I will write the students' assignments from week to week. The majority of teaching materials will be given at the lesson, copies from self-made and published materials.

At the outset, the student should have a couple pairs of sticks and some kind of a drum on which to practice. Before long, a drumset usually plays into the mix. I have much experience in the market and will help with this journey, be not afraid!

(is Jeff a good fit for my child? for me?)

YES! But you don't know that yet, so I offer a free introductory lesson to assure you.

                                    (how much does it cost?)

The monthly tuition fee is $110. That gets you four, 30-minute lessons per month. Occasional master classes and recitals are no extra charge.
