                               PIANO/KEYBOARD LESSONS

Piano offers an unparalleled range of expression. It attracts all levels and ages and can accommodate all styles of music. Piano is a springboard to nearly every other instrument.  It's visual nature is perfect for learning the theory of music. Simply put, piano is the quintessential musical instrument, the key to open any and all musical doors.

                                (beginners, what to expect)

Beginning piano students come in many ages, from preschoolers to retirees. My approach to each student is custom fit to that person's abilities and goals. For the school-age students, we start at the beginning. Playing piano requires the learning of two languages, music notation and the layout of the keyboard. To that end, I have had great success with the Alfred's series' method books. In addition, I pull materials from other published works and my personal inventions.

After some development of reading music and awakening the hands and fingers, each student begins a personal journey. Some lean toward rock and jazz, while others find classical music to be most satisfying. Together, we select music that is level appropriate and interesting to the student.

                                    (experienced players)

Non-beginners come in with varying levels of experience. Some want to "start all over", while others would like to develop a specific skill set and work on a particular style or piece of music. Together, we address the technical and musical considerations required to achieve that goal. Regardless of the level, each student can expect a thoughtful and individualized approach.

                                             (theory)

Grasping the theory of music is the single most powerful tool any musician can have. Regardless of the level, theory is a part of every lesson I teach. With this knowledge, a page of notes takes on an approachable form. Understanding time signatures, rhythms, dynamics, phrasing, key signatures, chord progressions and forms enhances the student's appreciation for music both as a listener and player.

                                          (jazz theory)

Jazz theory shares roots with classical theory, and then takes some colorful turns that give it an unmistakable identity. Students wanting experience in this style will learn to read from fake books and gain an understanding of chord progressions, chord extensions, voicing, and the skill of improvisation.

                                            (recitals)

Several times a year, we get together and play for each other. Pianists and percussionists share the stage and play a few minutes of music they have prepared. A diverse program will unfurl; Fur Elise might be followed by a Nirvana song, followed by a xylophone rag and then a Mozart Sonata. Playing and attendance is not mandatory, but encouraged as there is no better teacher than ones' peers.

(is Jeff a good fit for my child? for me?)

YES!   But you don't know that yet, so I offer a free introductory lesson to assure you.

                                  (how much does it cost?)

The monthly tuition fee is $110. That gets you four, 30 minute lessons per month. Occasional master classes and recitals are no extra charge.
